Georgescu, 64, was identified as the ringleader of the fraud scheme. Searches were conducted at five properties linked to him in Mogosoaia, Ciolpani, Buftea, and Bucharest. DIICOT prosecutors said three suspects, including Georgescu, set up the fraud scheme in September 2021 to obtain illegal financial gain.
The former presidential candidate is already facing two other criminal cases: one for allegedly acting against Romania’s constitutional order by planning a violent coup, and another for allegedly promoting fascist ideology.
The EU’s top diplomat criticized the Russian parliamentary elections as a setback for democracy, noting the limited choices for Russian voters due to a clampdown on anti-war candidates.
