Pune Civic Body Plans Tunnel Through Taljai Hill to Ease Traffic

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to build a tunnel through Taljai Hill to connect Hingne Khurd on Sinhagad Road with Sahakarnagar on Satara Road, according to Mayor Manjusha Nagpure. The tunnel is intended to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel time for commuters between the two densely populated areas.
Nagpure highlighted that the proposed tunnel would connect Katraj, Dhankawadi, Bibwewadi, and Sahakarnagar on Satara Road with Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar, thereby easing the daily commute for residents in these areas. She emphasized that the tunnel would help resolve the traffic issue in the city.
The PMC administration has proposed three road tunnels through the city’s hills, including the one through Taljai Hill. The other two proposed tunnels would pass through Vetal Hill, connecting Kothrud to Pashan and Aundh.
Nagpure has directed the civic administration to examine the feasibility of the Taljai Hill tunnel, which is expected to reduce both travel time and distance for commuters. However, civic officials noted that the construction of these tunnels would be feasible only if the project costs could be recovered through tolls from four-wheelers.
The PMC has already taken up the development of the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) and the Inner Ring Road, along with long-pending road projects such as Katraj-Kondhwa and Shivane-Kharadi, at its own expense. Given the expected high costs of the tunnels, a revenue source will be required to recover the project cost.
Providing alternative routes and making Pune’s transport system more efficient are among the key initiatives being pursued by the mayor. The proposed tunnels are part of these efforts to improve the city’s infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
