Barunson E&A CEO Yoonhee Choi highlighted the enduring popularity of 'Descendants of the Sun,' noting, 'Ten years on, Descendants of the Sun is still one of the titles people point to when they talk about the start of the K-Drama wave.' The adaptation is set to be released in Indonesian theaters by mid-2027.
The two-part feature film adaptation, currently in post-production, stars Indonesia’s biggest stars, Reza Rahadian and Dian Sastrowardoyo. The film reimagines the original story’s romance within an Indonesian setting and cultural context, while preserving the emotional core of the original series.
Barunson E&A’s ACFM slate also includes 'Satan’s Slaves: Origin,' the prequel to Joko Anwar’s horror franchise; 'Stoneborn,' an occult mystery starring Jongseo Jeon and Sul Kyung-gu; and 'Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng,' a comedy set for theatrical release on October 28.
The Indonesian adaptation of 'Descendants of the Sun' is part of a growing trend of remaking Korean properties in Indonesia. This adaptation is the country’s eighth-highest-grossing local film of all time, reflecting the increasing popularity of Korean content in the region.
