A sleep specialist recently appeared on the Unscripted by Meghana Reddy podcast to discuss the timing of workouts and their impact on sleep. She recommended morning exercise when possible, but noted that evening exercise can still be beneficial, provided it is completed at least two to three hours before bedtime.

The specialist explained that exercise increases body temperature, heart rate, breathing, and alertness, which can take time to subside. This stimulating effect can make it harder for some individuals to wind down and sleep well, especially those who are sensitive to sleep disruption.

Dr Sunil Kumar K, Lead Consultant – Interventional Pulmonology at Aster CMI Hospital in Bangalore, echoed the specialist's advice. He noted that late-night workouts are not harmful for everyone but can pose challenges for those who struggle with sleep. Dr Kumar suggested that morning or afternoon workouts might be preferable for individuals with sleep difficulties.

However, Dr Kumar also pointed out that moderate evening exercise can still be beneficial and does not necessarily lead to poor sleep quality. He emphasized the importance of finding a routine that works best for each individual's sleep patterns.
