A sleep specialist recently appeared on the Unscripted by Meghana Reddy podcast to discuss the timing of workouts and its impact on sleep.

According to the specialist, intense late-night workouts can increase body temperature, heart rate, and alertness, making it harder for some individuals to fall asleep.

Dr Sunil Kumar K, Lead Consultant – Interventional Pulmonology at Aster CMI Hospital in Bangalore, noted that while late-night workouts are not harmful for everyone, they can pose challenges for those who struggle with sleep.

Dr Kumar emphasized that moderate evening exercise can still be beneficial and does not necessarily lead to poor sleep quality.

What this adds

The report adds that morning or afternoon workouts may be preferable for individuals who have difficulty sleeping, but it does not specify the exact physiological mechanisms behind these effects.
