Pope Leo XIV to See Covered Rupnik Mosaics at Lourdes

Confirmed

Faith Desk

In Short: In preparation for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Lourdes, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas ordered the complete covering of Father Marko Rupnik's mosaics, which were partially covered earlier this year.

The mosaics, created by Rupnik, a priest accused by over 20 women of spiritual and sexual abuse, were commissioned in 2008 and adorned the walls of the Lourdes basilica.

Bishop Micas said he understood the concern for victims of clerical sexual abuse who visit Lourdes for healing and did not want the mosaics to deter them.

In June, Sister Samuelle, a French mosaicist and one of Rupnik’s alleged victims, visited Lourdes with Sobocki, witnessing the partially covered mosaics.

Sister Samuelle noted that the photo of her facing the mosaics said more than any safeguarding report.

Prior to the Pope's arrival, the sanctuary covered the mosaics entirely, a decision that will remain in place after the event.

The spokesperson for the sanctuary confirmed that the mosaics will remain covered indefinitely, emphasizing that this is a long-term solution.

Father Rupnik's mosaics were commissioned in 2008, 14 years before the accusations against him were made public.

The decision to cover the mosaics followed a consultation that included listening to accusers of clerical sexual abuse, legal professionals, safeguarding experts, and local chaplains.

In contrast, in Brazil, the largest installation of Rupnik's art will be inaugurated on the western facade of the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida, without a similar consultation process.

Guilherme Dudus, an attorney who co-founded Scars of Faith, called Lourdes' approach an 'important first step' but said the mosaics should ultimately be removed in both France and Brazil.
