President Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are banned from the White House, citing their 'constant reporting of fake news.' In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, 'I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW … and Politico … from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!
Despite the announcement, reporters from the banned outlets were still seen at the White House Friday afternoon, suggesting that their press credentials had not yet been revoked. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have not commented on the ban, but Politico stated in a post on X, 'POLITICO will continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones.
Trump's decision to ban these outlets is not the first time he has clashed with the media. In August, he called MS NOW White House correspondent Jake Traylor 'fake news' and 'one of the worst in the business.' In October, he told Politico’s Dasha Burns that 'Politico’s been so wrong about everything. Let’s get somebody else to ask some questions, you mind. Because Politico is fake news.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned Trump's actions, stating, 'RSF is appalled by Trump’s threat to ban CNN, MS NOW News, and Politico from the White House over coverage he dislikes. Press access is not a privilege for journalists.
The White House has insisted that the ban is not an attempt to intimidate the press. However, Politico noted in its statement, 'Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right.
