In Short: Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald announced that quarterback Sam Darnold will not play in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals due to a glute injury.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald revealed in a press conference on Wednesday that quarterback Sam Darnold will not dress for the team's Week 2 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals due to a glute injury sustained in the team's Week 1 win over the New England Patriots.

Darnold suffered the injury on the Seahawks' opening possession of the season and was replaced by Drew Lock, who will start against the Cardinals. Macdonald said the team does not anticipate placing Darnold on injured reserve.

Darnold reportedly suffered a muscle strain but not a fracture, giving the Seahawks optimism that his absence will be short-lived. In his first start of the season, Lock threw for 187 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions, posting a 113.3 passer rating and completing 72.7% of his passes.

Last season, Darnold totaled 4,048 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and a 99.1 passer rating, while completing 67.7% of his passes. The Seahawks won Super Bowl LX with Darnold as their starting quarterback, marking the second championship in franchise history.

The Seahawks will also be without starting safety Ty Okada, who missed the season opener with a hamstring injury. Okada was ruled out for Sunday's game in Arizona, along with Darnold.

Macdonald said Christian Haynes would be the next man up if Bradford can't play. Two players are questionable for the Seahawks: safety Nick Emmanwori, who missed the opener due to ankle surgery, and right guard Anthony Bradford, who is listed with knee and hip injuries.

Receiver Tory Horton, who missed last week's game with a hamstring injury, does not have a game status, meaning he is good to go. Veteran receiver Cooper Kupp (back) improved from limited to full participation on Thursday.

What this adds

The Seahawks' optimism about Darnold's short-term absence contrasts with earlier reports suggesting a potential absence of 4-6 weeks.
