Netflix has canceled the romantic drama Sweet Magnolias after five seasons, according to Deadline. The show, which starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, premiered its fifth and final season on June 11.
Sweet Magnolias, based on Sherryl Woods' novels, drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, down 30% from the premiere week of Season 4. The streamer did not commission a Season 6 writers room ahead of time, a departure from its usual practice for established shows.
However, Netflix had another project in the works: a new drama series called Ladies of the House, developed by Sweet Magnolias' executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, with Swisher set to executive produce and possibly star.

The cancellation of Sweet Magnolias comes after Netflix canceled Ransom Canyon earlier this month. Netflix's decision to cancel Sweet Magnolias was based on cost considerations, given the show's modest budget.
Like Sweet Magnolias, Ladies of the House is loosely based on a novel and centers on three women. Anderson, Swisher, and Kate Gordon will executive produce under their Rolling Clover banner, alongside Black Label Media.
