Cult video game Lollipop Chainsaw is set to receive a live-action feature film adaptation, Deadline exclusively reported.
The game, developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Kadokawa Games and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide since its 2012 release.
The live-action film is part of a broader strategy to establish Lollipop Chainsaw as a globally recognized entertainment franchise.
Franke, a representative from the production team, emphasized the importance of staying true to the game's spirit while creating something new.
The original game's creators, Gōichi Suda (Suda51) and filmmaker James Gunn, collaborated on the project.
The new game, Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, is being developed by JP Universe, with Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata at the helm.
Masahiro Yuki, the original game's writer, is penning the story for the sequel, and the original character designer NekoshowguN is also involved.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, a remastered version of the original game, was released in September 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC via Steam.
The sequel will launch for PlayStation 5 in 2027, with Juliet Starling, the game's protagonist, now equipped with roller skates.
Former Kadokawa Games CEO Yoshimi Yasuda, now CEO of Dragami Games, purchased the IP from Kadokawa Games in 2022.
Dragami Games was established in May 2022 by Yasuda and company director Satoshi Fuyuno.

What's still developing
- We are especially pleased to be working with such an experienced and passionate international team— one that understands what makes Lollipop Chainsaw special while embracing the opportunity to create something new.” Franke added: “We are making a film that feels unmistakably true to the spirit of Lollipop Chainsaw while standing completely on its own.
- Enough highly rated games are now out, I figured we may as well start talking about GotY in various categories.
- This is a spot to start discussing and predicting possible Game of the Year winners, including games not out or announced yet.
- The reason for this, is that they are voted on largely by the video game reviewers themselves (if they haven't reviewed it, then they ain't voting for it!).
- Metacritic isn't everything, but just for reference, here are the score 86+ 2026 games on metacritic currently which have at least 25 reviews (updated April 19): So we have an indie, resident evil, and the highest reviewed Pokemon game ever at the top.
- Since we're all sharing our favorite game we've played this year that didn't come out this year, here's mine: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1+, no contest.
- Kind of obvious though, considering my own pfp \ud83d\ude05 For the last 11 years in a row, the winner of Game of the Year at The Game Awards has been a game with at least a MetaCritic score of \"89\" on at least one platform, and at least 50 reviews on at least one platform.
- Using that criteria (and filtering out re-releases, remakes, remasters and DLC), the current pool of contenders to win the big prize are: You don't have to be on that list to be one of the 6 games nominated, but you do to win it.
- First game looked pretty dumb and it sounds like the devs are pandering to chuds. @CielloArc It's visual presentation needs a fair bit of work.
- Looks like how the original to be honest, I really enjoyed the game but I don’t ever try to claim it was good lol @ShadowRJ Bestie, nobody would've said ANYTHING if they didn't go all SBI BAAAD!1!
- There doesn't appear to be a trailer as yet, but there is this gameplay footage, showing about eight minutes of zombie-slicing action.
- Juliet uses her signature chainsaw along with some cheerleading moves to fend off the undead, and it's coupled with roller skates you can use to move around at speed.
