Kuwaiti photographer Ali Alobaidly has won the ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year 18 competition with his image titled “The Quiet Predator,” which captures the Shark Nebula (LDN 1235).
The Shark Nebula, a dark, dust-enshrouded formation located 650 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus, is featured in Alobaidly’s winning photograph.
Dr. Greg Brown, a competition judge and Royal Observatory Greenwich Astronomer, highlighted the innovative and skilled entries that reflect the cosmic wonders of the universe.
Judge Steve Marsh praised Alobaidly’s photo for its sharp details and dynamic lighting, noting the nebula’s contrast against distant galaxies.
Alobaidly expressed his honor at winning, acknowledging the talent of his fellow photographers.
The competition also recognized 15-year-old Nikolaos Strimpoulis from Greece, who won the ZWO Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year award for his photo “Mineral Moon,” which showcases the Moon’s subtle hues and mineral deposits.
