Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of the Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs extended his warmest wishes to the Jewish community as they observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, from sunset on Sept. 20 to nightfall on Sept. 21.
Bambera urged Catholics to reject antisemitism and to recognize the 'deep spiritual bonds' between Jews and Catholics. He highlighted themes of repentance and reconciliation, which are central to Yom Kippur and resonate deeply with Catholic teachings.
The bishop emphasized the importance of reflection, repentance, and renewal in both faiths, encouraging followers to consider how they can live more faithfully and generously. He noted that such practices can foster friendships and build trust between communities.
Bambera concluded his message with a traditional Jewish High Holiday greeting, 'G’mar chatima tovah,' wishing for a good final sealing in the divine Book of Life, which is believed to be sealed on Yom Kippur.
The bishop’s message aims to promote greater understanding, friendship, and peace among Jewish and Catholic communities.
