Cosmologists Unveil New Group to Study Cosmic Topology

Cosmologists have been studying the cosmic microwave background (CMB) since the 1960s, but only in the early 2000s did they gain the sensitivity needed to detect patterns indicative of cosmic topology.
Jaffe, author of the upcoming book “The Random Universe,” noted that the modern era of cosmic topology research began in the late 1990s when scientists realized they could use CMB patterns to investigate topology.
In recent years, Jaffe and colleagues have established COMPACT, a group of about twenty international scientists dedicated to understanding cosmic topology.
According to Jaffe, the existence of certain paths in the universe suggests a specific type of topology, such as a torus, which would imply a closed loop universe.
If cosmic topology is confirmed, it could challenge the idea of endless space travel, as it might mean that voyagers could return to their starting point after traveling vast distances.
The Nature Astronomy authors explain that cosmic topology could imprint subtle signatures on the CMB and the three-dimensional distribution of matter, breaking homogeneity at the largest scales.
The CMB, the furthest back in cosmic time that is currently observable, holds clues to the universe's global shape and connectivity, potentially invalidating some long-held axioms of cosmology.
