Amazon Prime released 'The Revolutionaries' on September 11, a web series based on economist and historian Sanjeev Sanyal’s 2023 book, 'Revolutionaries: The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom.
The series delves into lesser-known episodes of India’s militant nationalist movement, such as the Delhi Conspiracy Case of 1912, the Indo-German Conspiracy from 1914 to 1917, the Battle of Buribalam in 1915, and the Rodda Company arms heist in 1914.
These events, which took place in various parts of the country, were linked by a network of revolutionaries spread across cities like Lahore, Amritsar, and Calcutta. The series aims to humanize the names and events that have been largely forgotten.
The Agnijug Archive, which has recorded over 70 family stories since its inception in July 2022, has contributed to the series. These stories highlight the bravery and humanity of the revolutionaries, putting a personal face to historical figures.
The advent of the revolutionary political movement in India dates back to 1902 with the creation of the secret society Anushilan Samiti in Calcutta.
These personal stories shared by the families of the revolutionaries portrayed in the series add a layer of depth and emotion to the historical narrative, bringing these figures out of the shadows of history.
