Alfonso Cuarón to Visit Busan Film Festival, Spotlights European Women+ Filmmakers

In Short: The 31st Busan International Film Festival will feature Alfonso Cuarón's first visit to Korea and a program highlighting nine films by European women and genderqueer directors.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has announced that Alfonso Cuarón will make his first visit to Korea, coinciding with a special program spotlighting nine films from European women and genderqueer filmmakers.
BIFF programmer Seo Seunghee noted an increase in the prominence of European women directors among the strongest titles under consideration this year, both in volume and quality.
Four of the nine invited films are feature debuts, signaling a generational shift in European cinema.
The program includes May el-Toukhy’s “Woman Unknown,” which won the Golden Lion at Venice, making el-Toukhy the first Danish woman filmmaker to receive that prize.
Five directors from the program will travel to Busan to present their films, with Godrèche participating in a Cine Class session titled “Women, Rewriting the Screen.”
BIFF and EFP will co-host a panel, “Women Directors: Taking the Scene,” featuring directors such as el-Toukhy, Lentzou, and Ferrari, alongside Iranian director Marjan Khosravi, Chinese director Michelle Zhou, and Afghan director Zainab Entezar.
The “Voices of Women+ in Film” initiative aims to give distinctive European voices greater international visibility, with Busan serving as a key platform for dialogue between filmmakers and Asian audiences and industry professionals.

- “Campeón Gabacho,” starring Juan Daniel García Treviño, Leslie Grace, Rubén Blades, Eddie Marsan, Rosario Dawson and Cheech Marin, follows a Mexican immigrant building a life in the United States, and was produced by Jonás Cuarón alongside his father and Gabriela Rodriguez under their Esperanto Filmoj banner, with Nicolás Celis also producing.
