Waymo Expands to Singapore in 2028

In Short: Waymo will launch a commercial robotaxi service in Singapore in 2028, pending approval from the Land Transport Authority.
Waymo's vehicles will begin arriving in Singapore in the coming months, with plans to start mapping and autonomous testing with human safety drivers in 2027.
The company aims to offer fully autonomous ride-hailing services to the public by 2028, pending approval from Singapore's Land Transport Authority.
Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said, 'Singapore has built one of the safest, most efficient, and most forward-thinking transportation ecosystems in the world.
In addition to Singapore, Waymo plans to launch robotaxi services in London by the end of 2026, Tokyo in 2027, and Munich in late 2027.
This year, Waymo has also announced several new domestic markets, including Nashville, Denver, San Diego, and Las Vegas.
What's confirmed
- Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Lion Air Group said they had cancelled flights to and from Jakarta for the rest of the day.
- Police distributed masks to motorists in Cianjur, West Java, some 200 km (130 miles) from Anak Krakatau, the state news agency Antara reported, while the disaster management agency reported volcanic ash in the city, urging residents to stay indoors.
- Soekarno-Hatta International Airport suspended flight operations until 11:59 p.m.

- Motional, a US-based company majority owned by Hyundai, conducted a robotaxi pilot in Singapore in 2016.
- The company has also said it will bring its robotaxis to Munich, Germany, in late 2027, marking its first expansion in the European Union.
- The city-state requires all autonomous vehicles to undergo a safety assessment conducted at the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research (CETRAN) before they can be deployed on public roads.

- Loading SIA and Scoot have also cancelled flights between Singapore and Jakarta scheduled for Monday, with nine SIA flights and four Scoot flights affected.
- Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has extended a temporary closure until 9:30 a.m.
- Sixteen international flights were canceled, seven were delayed and five were rescheduled.
- Affected international routes include services to and from Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul/Incheon, Doha, Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur.
