OpenAI Launches Astra for Law for Legal Industry

OpenAI announced the launch of Astra for Law, a configuration of its latest large language model (LLM), GPT-6 Astra, tailored for legal work. The company said Astra for Law is initially targeted at Am Law 200 firms and legal tech vendors, with plans to expand access over time.
According to OpenAI, Astra for Law includes a dedicated legal search index and custom instructions for legal analysis and writing. The model is not a new AI but a configuration of GPT-6 Astra, with settings, tools, and context tailored for professional legal work.
OpenAI emphasized that Astra for Law will be available soon to API customers, including Harvey and Legora, and offered to selected law firms through a new “Trusted Access” program targeting Am Law 200 firms. This program includes a zero data retention policy for the API and exclusion of ChatGPT Enterprise from human review by anyone at OpenAI.
In addition to Astra for Law, OpenAI announced a series of new plugins designed to make ChatGPT more useful and extensible for legal work, including 26 from vendors such as Thomson, Harvey, Legora, and iManage, and nine built by lawyers and legal engineers, as well as 47 custom skills.
OpenAI’s efforts in the legal industry follow the hiring of Jason Boehmig, cofounder and former CEO of contract lifecycle management company Ironclad, to lead development of products for the legal industry. Boehmig and Sherwin Wu, the OpenAI engineer who has led the development of the legal product, provided a briefing for the media on Astra for Law.
