In the spring of 2025, two teams of astronomers simultaneously announced the discovery of 'little red dots' that were unlike any other celestial objects observed. These dots, which shine with the light of billions of suns, are now being considered as potential new astronomical objects: supermassive black holes forming inside colossal stars.

The Webb telescope's observations suggest that these little red dots could be the birthplaces of supermassive black holes. The teams propose that the red color is due to dust blocking the blue light, while the brightness indicates the presence of a black hole at the core. This new theory challenges the earlier belief that little red dots were distant galaxies.

Anna-Christina Eilers, an astrophysicist at MIT, noted, 'The field has gotten very polarized,' reflecting the debate among researchers about the nature of these objects. Initially, they were thought to be distant galaxies, but later, they were seen more like supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies.

Simulations predict that overmassive black holes could generate a spectrum similar to that of the little red dots. However, active black holes, like quasars, produce powerful radio and X-ray light, which the little red dots do not emit. A new study in Nature argues that these dots are young, overmassive black holes, a theory that could rewrite our understanding of black hole formation.
