The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has intervened to halt the screening of an uncertified documentary about jailed activist Umar Khalid at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H).
According to sources, the CBFC flagged the proposed screening, stating that public exhibition of an uncertified film would violate the Cinematograph Act.
The IIIT-Hyderabad administration distanced itself from the proposed screening, asserting that neither the institute nor any of its recognized student bodies had organized or hosted the event.
The student committee behind the screening initially postponed the program citing logistical and security concerns, but maintained that they were not backing down due to pressure.
The invitation for the screening was planned on the occasion of 'Political Prisoners' Day', highlighting the controversial nature of the event.
The CBFC, which operates under the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry, emphasized the need for specific exemptions for public screenings of uncertified films.
