The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that Charlotte, North Carolina, will host its year-end championships from 2027 to 2029. According to Valerie Camillo, Chair of the WTA, "The WTA Finals represents everything that makes women’s tennis extraordinary: the world’s best athletes, competing at the highest level, on a stage worthy of what they have accomplished." The tournament will be held at the Spectrum Center, home of the Charlotte Hornets, and will involve the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the year.
The move to Charlotte comes after the WTA's previous arrangement with Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ended one year early. The prize money for this year's Finals is $10 million, which is $5.5 million less than the sum put up by Saudi Arabia last year. Camillo stated, "What is most important to know is that we have a clear path to deliver consistent, sustainable financial performance in 2027 and beyond, supported by strong revenue and audience growth." The tournament will be reduced from eight days to five due to the basketball season, which is likely to affect revenue.
Charlotte's selection as the host city was confirmed by multiple outlets, including Bounces, TennisTemple, and Field Level Media. The Charlotte Sports Foundation's CEO, Will Pitts, said, "This is a transformational moment for Charlotte and for our organization." The WTA has already started exploring alternative formats with the players, but if the round-robin element of the tournament survives, the finalists would need to play every day.
The transition to Charlotte will bring the world's best players to the Spectrum Center, where the Charlotte Hornets play their home NBA games. The basketball season will be in full swing next November, and the WTA Finals will be reduced from eight days to five. This change is expected to impact revenue, as the tournament will need to work around the Hornets' schedule. The WTA has found partners who share its ambition and a place where it can build a true home for the Finals and the WTA.
