The helicopter, fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, killed NBC4 reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, according to KNBC anchor Colleen Williams. In addition to the three people who died at the scene, one person nearby was taken to the hospital after suffering an apparent panic attack. The crash left two people dead and several others injured, according to authorities.
LA Mayor Karen Bass called it a tragic day for the city, saying, 'This is a heartbreaking night for our city.' NBC4 and Telemundo 52 issued a statement expressing condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives. The incident has prompted a moment of silence and a call for regrouping from local news anchors.
The crash was captured on live broadcast, with an alert-like sound heard shortly before the helicopter began to descend, after which the live feed cut off. The Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson said the helicopter crashed into a car park, striking some parked vehicles. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
