Using advanced simulations, researchers have proposed that the Sun may have swallowed a planet roughly 5.6 times the mass of Earth during its early stages. The simulations suggest that a planet could survive its journey through the Sun's outer layers, leaving a detectable chemical signature.

The research, conducted by Dr. Yildiz, involved modeling two early feeding episodes for the young Sun: one involving heavy-element-rich material, likely from a swallowed planet, and another of gas poor in heavy elements. The models indicate that a planet weighing between 4.6 and 5.8 Earth masses, if low in lithium, could account for the Sun's current lithium level. Dr. Yildiz stated, 'Since planets are made of material that is chemically different from the gas in the disc, we wondered whether the early engulfment of a planet could have left a chemical signature inside the young Sun.

Further, the simulations show that such a planet could survive its passage through the Sun's outer layers while losing very little mass. This suggests that planets may leave detectable fingerprints inside their host stars long after they have disappeared. Dr. Yildiz added, 'While it may not be possible to definitively prove the Sun swallowed a planet, if the predicted structural and chemical signature could be independently identified through helioseismic or other observations, it would provide strong evidence for such an event happening billions of years ago.

The findings, published in [new The Royal Astronomical Society], propose a simple explanation for several stubborn mysteries about the Sun's composition and structure. The study, which used the MESA stellar-evolution code, suggests that the Sun may have engulfed a super-Earth-sized planet early in its history, potentially reshaping its internal structure and chemical makeup.
