The film, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, will open the festival on October 15, marking Spain's entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
La Bola Negra' is a 35mm production that explores the lives of three gay men across three different time periods, from 1932 to 2017, and has been met with a 20-minute standing ovation at its premiere. The film stars Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González, Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, and Penélope Cruz, with Glenn Close also appearing in pivotal roles.
According to Variety, 'La Bola Negra' was announced as Spain's entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards, with Alejandro Amenábar representing Spain's Academia de Cine. The film's selection marks the beginning of its journey towards the Oscars, with final nominations set to be announced in January 2027.
The NewFest38 lineup, which includes 144 projects from 23 countries, is led by some of the year's most celebrated queer films. The festival will stream virtually from October 15-30, offering a wide range of narrative features.
