In Short: Indian business schools, including IIMs, saw a decline in their rankings, particularly in return on investment and entrepreneurship, despite a significant increase in their global presence.

Indian business schools, including the top three Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), have slipped in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, according to reports. Despite a nearly fivefold increase in India's presence in global rankings since 2015, the three IIMs—Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Calcutta—remain the only Indian institutions in the global top 100 but have seen their rankings deteriorate. The decline is attributed to a global increase in competitiveness, particularly in areas such as return on investment and entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes.

The QS Global MBA Rankings 2027 featured 19 Indian MBA providers, up from five in 2020 and seven in 2022. Five Indian institutions entered the ranking for the first time this year, while six retained their positions from the previous edition. IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Calcutta, which have historically been among the top Indian institutions, saw their entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes rankings weaken. However, IIM Bangalore maintained its employability ranking at 29th globally and second in Asia.

According to Quacquarelli, a key figure in the QS rankings, the MBA market is changing, and providers are becoming more competitive. 'For Indian institutions this year, global peers are outpacing in key areas such as return on investment and entrepreneurship & alumni outcomes,' he said. Despite the improvements in thought leadership, providers must continue to serve MBA students and help them achieve their career ambitions.

Among the new entrants, OP Jindal Global University (JGU) is the highest placed, ranking in the 171-180 range. Woxsen School of Business ranks number one in Asia in the Diversity lens and 33rd globally. The US continues to dominate the rankings, with MIT Sloan ranking No. 1, followed by other top US institutions. The UK is the second most represented country with 42 institutions, while France, India, Canada, and Spain each have 35, 28, 24, and 24 entries, respectively.

Indian business schools have more than tripled their representation in the 2027 QS Business Master’s Rankings, with 19 entries this year compared with five in 2020. The US holds the top four spots in the 2027 QS Global MBA Ranking, with MIT Sloan ranking No. 1. Ranking 64th this year, IIM Bangalore performs well in Employability, retaining its 29th position globally and second in Asia, and in Thought Leadership, where it rises slightly to 51st.
