Spencer claims that Charles allegedly told him, 'Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough,' during a conversation just days after Diana's passing. This statement has caused concern at Buckingham Palace, which issued a rare response, noting it 'does not comment on books as a matter of principle.
According to Russell Myers, the associate editor of the Daily Mirror, the royal family is potentially in damage control and trying to 'fire back' at Spencer with the statement. Myers told Sunrise that 'I don’t think anyone expected Buckingham Palace to issue a statement of any shape or form.
The allegations come as Spencer's book serializes claims that Charles tried to prevent his nephews, Prince William and Prince Harry, from walking in Princess Diana's funeral procession, arguing it would have gone against her wishes. Despite Spencer's objections, William and Harry both participated in the procession, walking on either side of him.
Spencer's memoir also recounts a conversation where he pointed out that Charles was 30 years old at the time of his great-uncle's funeral, while William and Harry were 15 and 12, respectively. Charles allegedly burst into anger during this exchange, according to 7NEWS.
The Daily Mail published a preview of Spencer's book on Tuesday, which includes these allegations. Buckingham Palace's spokesperson responded to the claim in a statement to ABC News, but did not provide further details.
