The junction, already a bottleneck for motorists traveling from the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road towards Navi Mumbai, could face further disruption. Traffic police officials are concerned that the construction of a crucial pillar could reduce the available carriageway and lead to longer queues on the Sion-Panvel Highway.

Shipping restrictions on the Panama Canal, due to worsening drought caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon, could further exacerbate global maritime trade challenges. The canal handles 5% of global maritime trade and about 40% of US container traffic, making it a critical route for companies trading between China, Asia, and the US. With El Niño expected to peak later this year, shipping delays could become more frequent.

Commuters are already facing substantial waiting times at the T Junction, with one advocate, Shaikh Faiyaz Alam, expressing concern that the pillar could add another traffic gridlock. The construction of the pillar is part of a Rs 1,958-crore flyover project aimed at easing traffic movement between the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road and Navi Mumbai. The project, which comprises two vehicular arms, is expected to allow vehicles to bypass the existing T-junction signal once completed.

The construction of the flyover has already caused traffic disruptions on the Sion-Panvel Highway, with a piling rig overturning near Maharashtra Nagar on April 29, killing a Mumbai Police constable and causing major congestion. Traffic police officials are working out effective ways to manage the traffic and are hoping to mitigate the impact of the upcoming construction work.
