Cate Blanchett will travel to Tokyo for the 39th edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival, where five short films backed by the Displacement Film Fund will receive their Japan premieres. The festival will screen these works, including shorts by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof and Afghanistan’s Shahrbanoo Sadat, who will join a Q&A session with Blanchett after the films are screened on October 30.
The Displacement Film Fund, co-founded and led by Blanchett, was established last year to champion and fund the work of displaced filmmakers or filmmakers with a proven track record in creating authentic stories focused on the experiences of displaced people. It is backed by the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Hubert Bals Fund, which supports groundbreaking film projects in every stage of the production process, working especially with filmmakers from countries where local film funding and infrastructure is lacking or restrictive.
Blanchett’s Tokyo visit coincides with her receiving the Praemium Imperiale Award during the same week. She recently wrapped production on Alice Birch’s “Sweetsick” and is in development with Janicza Bravo on a film about Martha Stewart. Her feature “Father Mother Sister Brother” (2025), which won the Golden Lion at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, is scheduled for Japanese theatrical release on November 4.
The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival, hosted by Unijapan, will run from October 26 to November 4, screening five short works produced with support from the Displacement Film Fund, of which Japanese brand Uniqlo is a founding partner. Following the film screenings, there will be a Q&A session with director Mohammad Rasoulof, director Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Blanchett.
