Alzheimer’s damage may begin outside the brain

In Short: New research highlights the importance of detecting Alzheimer’s biomarkers outside the brain, linking outdoor light exposure to a lower risk of developing the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease can be detected through various biomarkers, including beta-amyloid plaques, tau tangles, and signs of neurodegeneration or brain inflammation, according to Being Patient. Beta-amyloid plaques, a hallmark of the disease, are sticky protein fragments that clump together between nerve cells in the brain, interfering with cell-to-cell communication and contributing to the death of brain cells over time.
Tau tangles, another key biomarker, are twisted fibers of abnormal tau protein that build up inside brain cells. These tangles disrupt the transport of nutrients and signals within neurons, leading to cell damage and cognitive decline. Inflammation, another critical aspect of Alzheimer’s, can be studied using blood tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, and advanced brain imaging techniques like PET scans. Elevated inflammatory markers such as cytokines or proteins like YKL-40 and GFAP may indicate brain inflammation linked to neurodegeneration.
Blood tests for Alzheimer’s disease are emerging as a diagnostic tool, aiming to detect biological markers or biomarkers associated with the disease. These tests can help identify individuals at risk of developing Alzheimer’s, potentially allowing for earlier intervention and treatment.
Exposure to outdoor light may be beneficial for brain health, according to a new report from the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation. The study, published in General Psychiatry, found that older adults who received more exposure to bright daylight were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Over the course of the study, more than 700 participants developed Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
The findings suggest that maintaining adequate exposure to natural light could be a simple and effective way to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. However, further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and to develop practical guidelines for light exposure.
Additionally, a recent study published in Nature Aging, titled 'A microprotein atlas of the human frontal cortex in Alzheimer’s disease,' has identified new microproteins. First and co-corresponding author Brendan Miller, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in Saghatelian’s lab, stated, 'We were able to take all these technologies and tools and reapply them to existing data from nearly 500 brains to find new microproteins.' This research could lead to new diagnostic tools and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
