Volvo Unveils Long-Range Plug-In Hybrids for XC60 and XC90

Swedish automaker Volvo has unveiled the updated PHEV versions of its popular XC60 and XC90 SUVs, marking the first 'long range plug-in hybrids' from the brand. These new models, which will begin production in late Fall 2026, are expected to deliver class-leading ranges of 78 miles for the XC60 and 73 miles for the XC90, significantly boosting their electric-only driving capabilities.
The XC60 is receiving new styling to align with Volvo’s latest design language, while the XC90 undergoes similar updates. These changes are subtle but important, as they enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the vehicles. The new powertrains feature larger batteries, which more than double the real-world electric range compared to previous models, making them competitive with fully electric vehicles.
According to Volvo, the new XC60 T8 model now features a 37.9 kWh (net) battery pack, providing an electric driving range of 78 miles, as per the EPA test cycle. This is a significant improvement from the 17 miles offered by the previous model in 2018. The XC90, on the other hand, offers a range of 99 miles. These extended ranges are expected to cater to the needs of the median US Volvo driver, whose commute is 22 miles round-trip.
Volvo is aiming to leverage the success of its hybrid models to fund the development of its future pure electric models, such as the EX50, EX60, and a new affordable model that will replace the EX30. The automaker believes that by pushing the boundaries of what is possible with PHEVs, it can attract more customers to its electrified lineup.
The new models also come with significant design and safety upgrades. The XC60, for instance, now features a wide range of advanced driver support features, including lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with 3D view, enabled by upgraded sensing technology. Additionally, the XC60 and XC90 will be equipped with Google Gemini, the next-generation AI assistant from Google, enhancing the vehicles' infotainment systems.
Production on the updated XC60 and XC90 is set to begin in late Fall 2026, with customer deliveries scheduled to start in early 2027. Volvo hopes that these long-range plug-in hybrids will not only meet but exceed customer expectations, solidifying the brand's position in the evolving automotive market.
