The Reds began the season as one of the top teams in baseball and led the NL Central for the first month, showcasing early optimism for a playoff run. However, the Mets, who made significant offseason moves, are now two years without reaching the playoffs, a stark contrast to their expectations.
The Mets' season was derailed by a 12-game losing streak in April, which proved too deep a hole to dig out of. This failure cost manager Jorge Mendoza his job in June, as the team fired him.
Despite the disappointment, the Mets identified four key players who can form the foundation of a future contending team. This season's struggles, however, were exacerbated by one of the worst offseasons by executive David Stearns in recent memory.
