Pope Leo XIV has granted a Guadalupan Jubilee year to mark the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the current Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Tepeyac, Mexico, according to reports. The jubilee, which will run from October 12, 2031, to October 12, 2032, will include a plenary indulgence for those who visit the basilica with devotion and participate in a liturgy or dedicate time to prayer there, according to Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, the archbishop of Mexico.

Cardinal Aguiar Retes announced the news on September 9 with profound joy and gratitude. The jubilee will be inaugurated with a solemn Eucharistic celebration on the date of the anniversary and will end exactly one year later. The current basilica, which was inaugurated nearly 50 years ago and became the new 'sacred little home' of Juan Diego’s 'tilma' with the image of Our Lady, replaced an earlier building.

The Archdiocese of Mexico City also announced several liturgical events on the eve of the Jubilee Year, including morning prayer followed by Mass on October 11. The jubilee corresponds to the fifth year of the nine-year novena leading up to the jubilee marking the 500th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions to St. Juan Diego.

Cardinal Aguiar Retes expressed his joy and gratitude for the jubilee celebration, which he said was granted through the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican tribunal that deals with matters of conscience. He urged those who visit the basilica during the Jubilee Year to obtain a plenary indulgence for themselves or apply it to the souls in Purgatory.

Bishop Oscar Cantú, chairman of the USCCB’s Subcommittee on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, presented a broad proposal for activities for participating in these years of jubilee preparation.
“May Holy Mary of Guadalupe, Mother of the True God for whom we live, help us make fruitful use of this Jubilee and accompany us on this journey of spiritual renewal and conversion,” Cardinal Aguiar wrote.
