Nitter and XCancel Shut Down Again After X’s Legal Threats

In Short: Nitter and XCancel, privacy-friendly services for viewing X posts, have been shut down following X’s latest legal actions.
Tech giant X has once again silenced Nitter and XCancel, privacy-friendly services that allowed users to view X posts without logging in. According to TechCrunch, X accused Nitter of scraping its data to access accounts and session tokens, violating its rules.
Despite the threat, Nitter maintained its stance, stating on its GitHub page that it would continue its operations following legal advice. However, the project’s GitHub page was archived on September 11, indicating it is now in read-only status and can no longer be modified or updated.
This isn't the first time X has attempted to shut down Nitter. In 2024, Nitter’s main instance, Nitter.net, went offline after X implemented new API restrictions. However, Nitter and XCancel had briefly resumed operations in early September before being shut down again.
X’s latest move comes after the services had been up and running again for a short period, following a previous shutdown. The closure of these services has left many users without alternative options for accessing X posts.
Nitter’s GitHub page stated that more details would come soon, but as of now, the project is effectively dead, marking a significant setback for privacy-focused users of X.
