IIT Madras Launches Wadhwani AI Studio to Turn Research into Startups

The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at IIT Madras is launching AI Studio to fast-track research ideas into startups, according to reports. The initiative aims to help researchers and entrepreneurs develop AI, ML, and data science research into real-world startup ideas.
The AI Studio will open for applications on October 3, 2026, and is open to IIT Madras and WSAI researchers, academic founders from other institutions, and external entrepreneurs with AI, ML, or data science ideas. Selected teams will receive support to turn research and early-stage concepts into viable businesses, including assessing market demand and developing products.
Founders participating in the programme will have access to seed funding, cloud and computing credits, research laboratories, data and research resources, mentoring, and entrepreneurship training. The studio plans to conduct two cohorts annually, with applications opening during winter and spring cycles.
The initiative aims to take AI research beyond academic publications and into real-world applications, focusing on areas such as health AI, education AI, responsible AI, and Indic language AI, according to an IIT Madras press release.

- The launch of the venture backed studio is aimed at helping researchers and entrepreneurs turn artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and data science research-work into companies.
- This will include testing whether there is a demand for the product, developing it further and preparing the venture for funding and eventual incorporation into the IIT Madras incubation ecosystem.
