Thomas Massie, a Republican representative, introduced articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on the House floor, accusing him of high crimes and misdemeanors related to military actions and suppressing free speech.
In a statement, Massie said, 'In all of this, Secretary Hegseth abused the powers entrusted to him as Secretary of Defense by subordinating the constitutional limits on the use of military force and the laws governing the conduct of hostilities to his own policy objectives.
The articles of impeachment include accusations of violating the War Powers Resolution in Iran, kidnapping a sovereign foreign leader during Operation Absolute Resolve, and carrying out unlawful orders in Yemen.
Massie’s move marks the first impeachment effort against a Cabinet member by a lawmaker from the president’s own party, and his resolution is unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled Congress.
