The Quiet Power of Wholesale

Confirmed

Business Desk

In Short: From market intelligence to deeper retailer relationships, wholesale is transforming how fashion brands decide where to grow next, according to a recent report from WWD. Brands are now treating wholesale as the infrastructure that shapes their business, not just a sales channel.

According to a report from NuOrder by Lightspeed, 78 percent of senior wholesale leaders rank B2B wholesale as their top investment channel, with 53 percent prioritizing strengthening existing retail partnerships. This strategic shift reflects the growing importance of wholesale in brand growth strategies.

Wholesale's strategic value extends beyond market expansion, impacting how easy it is for brands to do business. For years, wholesale was seen as the machinery behind the fashion business: necessary, complex, and largely invisible to the customer. However, it has quietly taken on a much larger role, accounting for as much as 60 percent of total sales for many fashion brands.

Traditionally, the wholesale growth story was about expansion with more storefronts, territories, and accounts. Today, the more interesting question is what happens when brands look at wholesale with great precision. This precision makes wholesale particularly valuable in a market where expansion comes with greater pressure to protect margins, manage inventory, and maintain brand strength.

In a related development, wholesale electricity prices in Europe have surged, with daily power consumption increasing by 10.18% in Germany. Wholesale electricity prices in France climbed to nearly €160 per megawatt-hour, and in Germany, they exceeded €200 per megawatt-hour, with intraday spikes surpassing €600 per megawatt-hour, according to Eurelectric and the European Gas Hub.

Analysts warn that storage levels of natural gas are well below average, and wholesale prices are at a three-year high, suggesting a hike is on the way for consumers. This highlights the volatility in energy markets and the impact on household bills, as ministers are urged to back homegrown renewable power to end dependence on volatile fossil energy, according to Morningstaronline.

The quiet power of wholesale is reshaping not just the fashion industry but also the energy sector, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of strategic business decisions on both consumer goods and essential services.
