Physicists Unveil Lab Simulations of Cosmic Rainstorms

Many researchers are now seeking a clearer picture of cosmic rays without needing to look to the sky, as they can be studied in laboratories. This new approach allows scientists to simulate cosmic rainstorms, the powerful interstellar matter that constantly strikes Earth's atmosphere.

In the early 20th century, physicist Victor Hess discovered cosmic rays while conducting experiments aboard hot air balloons. These rays were later found to contain antimatter, hinting at their origins in extreme cosmic events.

Scientists believe cosmic rays originate from extremely hot and distant regions of the universe, such as exploding stars and supermassive black holes. However, a precise understanding of their formation remains elusive.

To address this, a team of particle physicists is using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN to simulate cosmic rainstorms. By colliding oxygen atoms with protons, they hope to gain insights into the birth of these cosmic phenomena.
