Key NDA Allies Back UCC, JD(U) Resists in Bihar

A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced plans to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in all 21 NDA-ruled states before the next Lok Sabha polls in 2029, most alliance partners came out in support of the move.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has a significant Muslim vote bank in Andhra Pradesh, and the Shiv Sena expressed support for the UCC, as did the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular).
BJP leader Bhattacharya stated, 'We are going to introduce the UCC, it’s not a hidden agenda for us. BJP, since its inception, has been holding it as one of its priorities and now it’s our moral duty to fulfil it. A large section of the population is also keen to see that a uniform civil code is implemented in the state.
However, the JD(U), which also has a sizeable Muslim vote bank in Bihar, made it clear that it would not allow any such move in the state, with Shyam Rajak reiterating that the party favours the Bill at the national level, but not in Bihar.

- The TDP and the JD(U), which also has a sizeable Muslim vote bank in Bihar, had earlier opposed any legislation without adequate consultation, but the TDP appears to have since softened its stand on the issue.
