Global temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in August, according to Copernicus data, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing climate crisis. This threshold, set as a 'defence line' to avoid irreversible climate impacts, has been breached, underscoring the need for immediate and robust action.

Scientists are increasingly concerned about the loss of cooling effects from sulphur pollution, which has been partly counteracting the warming caused by carbon dioxide. This phenomenon, exacerbated by Britain's record-breaking hot summer, is raising questions about the effectiveness of current mitigation strategies.

The Indian Express reports that the 1.5-degree Celsius limit, established in the 2015 Paris Agreement, is now at risk. The report notes that breaching this threshold could lead to high risks for some regions and vulnerable ecosystems over an extended period. The loss of cooling from sulphur pollution is contributing to the acceleration of global warming.

In April 2024, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the fourth global mass coral bleaching event was triggered by extraordinarily high ocean temperatures. Additionally, a 2023 report found that five major climate tipping points are already at risk of being crossed due to warming, further emphasizing the critical state of the planet's climate.
