Ukraine and Russia Engage in Drone Attacks Amid Sanctions Call

In Short: Ukraine has called for stronger US sanctions against Russia and has launched drone attacks on Russian industrial facilities, while Russian forces have struck several Ukrainian targets, causing civilian casualties.
In response, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that its forces had downed 230 Ukrainian drones overnight in more than a dozen Russian regions, as well as over Crimea and the Azov and Black seas.
The attacks have resulted in civilian casualties, with three people killed in southeastern Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions and in Kharkiv in the northeast, according to the governors of those regions.
Ukraine has also carried out drone attacks on Russia, killing one in the Kursk region, according to local officials. In Russia’s Belgorod region, a frequent target of Ukrainian forces, one person died in a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said.
Russia’s Defence Ministry added that two cargo vessels were also hit overnight in the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk, according to Interfax news agency.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger US sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the need for Ukraine to engage in peace talks with Moscow. "We need to continue to put pressure on Russia and ensure that the international community supports our efforts," Zelensky stated.
Efforts are under way to repair Ukraine's power network so people can run heaters and access water during winter, which the UN official described as Ukraine's "toughest winter" since the full-scale invasion in 2022.

- These attacks came after Ukraine launched drones on industrial facilities in Russia’s Samara region, Interfax reported, citing regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev.
- Ukraine’s General Staff said on Saturday that one of the drones hit the Togliattikauchuk plant, specialised in the production of synthetic rubbers and fuel additives that are used in fuel for Russian missiles.
