Uganda's King Oyo, the world's youngest reigning monarch, was laid to rest on Saturday, days after a contentious debate over who would succeed him. The selection committee from the Babiito royal clan announced that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor for the public broadcaster UBC, had been chosen to succeed his cousin as king.
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni urged unity, stating, 'Words spoken in grief can cause pain, division and conflict. It can even destroy the legacy of the king we are mourning.' The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, echoed this call, adding, 'It can even destroy the legacy of the king we are mourning.' The funeral procession saw thousands of mourners lining the streets as the king's casket was transported to the royal tombs in Fort Portal for a private ceremony.

Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, commonly known as King Oyo of Tooro or King Rukidi IV, was the 13th Omukama of the Kingdom of Tooro in Uganda from 1995 until his death in 2026.
