The incident occurred near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch area of the lake on Friday morning. Geordan White, the man who died, was temporarily able to hold onto a floatation device thrown to him from the boat but soon slipped underwater and did not resurface.
Another person on the boat safely recovered the dog, and the Forest Service also responded by boat during the search. The Shasta County Sheriff's Office arrived at the lake around 9:12 am on September 11, 2026, after receiving a call regarding a possible drowning.
The report found that between 400 and 500 boaters die from drowning every year, highlighting the dangers of such incidents. The men involved in the rescue relied heavily on Google’s Gemini AI to provide them with information about the route and what to pack for their trip, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.
