Searchlight Pictures has announced a sequel to the 2005 holiday film 'The Family Stone,' which will reunite most of the original cast for a new holiday adventure. The film, titled 'The Families Stone,' will pick up 20 years after the death of Diane Keaton's character, matriarch Sybil Stone, as the Stone family reunites for Christmas.
Thomas Bezucha, who directed the original film, is returning as writer and director, promising a reunion that feels like 'one big Christmas-sweater-squishing group hug,' according to A.V. Club contributor Caroline Siede. The cast, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, and others, will reprise their roles, with Nelson rejoining as the patriarch.
Missing from the cast is Diane Keaton, who passed away in October 2025, but her presence will still be felt in the sequel. The film will explore the Stone family's holiday reunion, only to face the season's biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family. Production on the sequel is set to take place this fall in New York.
The original 'The Family Stone' has since become a holiday favorite, grossing $92 million worldwide during its December 2005 release. The film follows Everett Stone (Mulroney) as he brings his girlfriend Meredith (Parker) home to meet his liberal, bohemian New England family over the holidays. The sequel is expected to continue the holiday chaos that made the original film a beloved holiday favorite.

What's confirmed
- Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, The Family Stone watches as Everett Stone (Mulroney) brings his tightly wound girlfriend Meredith (Parker) home to meet his liberal, bohemian New England family over the holidays.
What's still developing
- Surprising as it may seem, given how easy a layup one would assume they’d be, legacy sequels to holiday movies are rare.
- There’s A Christmas Story Christmas and, uhh, Bad Santa 2— which is technically not a “legacy” movie in the strictest sense ( more of a “belated” one ), but it did follow its predecessor by thirteen years.
- Club contributor Caroline Siede wrote, “I get why The Family Stone is something of an acquired taste, but I also think it’s one worth acquiring.” Something to consider for the unconverted as the holidays near.
- Nelson reprises as patriarch Kelly Stone, with Danes back as Julie Morton, McAdams as Amy Stone, Mulroney as Everett Stone, Parker as Meredith Morton, Wilson as Ben Stone, Giordano as Thad Stone, Reaser as Susannah Stone, Schneider as Brad Stevenson, and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.
- More Disney Movie News: Asa Germann, who is known for his performances in both Scream 7 and the superhero series Gen V, has been tapped for a role in X-Men.
- The Stone family is reuniting for another chaotic holiday season.
