In Short: A three-member inquiry committee at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has concluded that there was 'no evidence of any intention to target, insult or hurt any individual or community' regarding a casteist poster displayed during a Janmashtami programme on campus, according to The Indian Express.
The committee, which was constituted by IIT Registrar Dr Kumar Sambhav Pandey, submitted its report to Director Laxmikant Behera on September 11, following the incident on September 4.
The probe committee recommended that the students involved be counselled and sensitized, rather than facing disciplinary action. It also highlighted the absence of a clear procedure for organizing such events, suggesting this as an institutional gap that needs immediate attention.
The committee identified the student who displayed the poster and concluded that the case does not fall under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The poster, titled 'Bhagavad Gita — The Timeless Wisdom,' was displayed outside the institute auditorium.
The controversy erupted after a photograph and video of the poster were circulated on social media, leading to criticism of the institute administration. The poster was not reviewed, approved, or endorsed by any authority within the institute.
