Met Office Chief Meteorologist Ian Lisk stated, 'The latest seasonal forecasts suggest an increased likelihood of wetter than average conditions as we move through autumn, which would be consistent with the historical influence of El Niño events.
A wetter-than-normal season is forecast for the upcoming autumn, increasing the risk of flooding, while the Met Office also predicts a warmer-than-normal autumn.
Professor Scaife noted, 'Forecasters already see signals for increased rainfall and storminess in autumn here in the UK, especially into November and December.
While a wetter outlook for late autumn and into winter brings relief to drought-stricken regions, it also poses the threat of flooding, especially given the increased intensity of rainfall due to climate change.
