Thai Buddhist Monk Arrested on Embezzlement Charges Amid Monastic Scandals

Thai police have arrested Phra Wachirayan Wi, the abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, on charges including embezzlement and money laundering, according to the lead police investigator Pattanasak Bupphasuwan. The case involves the misappropriation of approximately 89 million baht ($2.7 million or £2 million) intended for temple renovations and payments for Buddhist amulets and other sacred objects.
The arrest comes just over a year after another sex and blackmail case involving senior monks sparked public outrage and calls for greater scrutiny of temple finances. The latest scandal has prompted authorities to expand the investigation to identify other individuals involved and restore public confidence in Buddhism.
The monk was filmed having sex with a 47-year-old woman, who has also been arrested and accused of helping convert and conceal the money. Leaked CCTV footage of the pair was widely broadcast on Thai media, highlighting the severity of the situation.
According to Nattasak Chaowanasai, the commissioner of Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau, the investigation will continue to identify other people involved and address the ongoing issues within the monastic community.
