Pope Leo XIV has granted a Guadalupan Jubilee year to mark the 50th anniversary of the October 12, 1976, dedication of the current Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Tepeyac, Mexico. The jubilee year, which will begin on October 12, 2023, and extend until October 12, 2027, will offer a plenary indulgence to those who visit the Basilica of Tepeyac with devotion and a contrite spirit and participate in a liturgy or dedicate time to prayer there, according to Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, the archbishop of Mexico.
Cardinal Retes announced the news on September 9 with profound joy and gratitude. The jubilee will be inaugurated with a solemn Eucharistic celebration on the date of the anniversary and will end exactly one year later. This jubilee corresponds to the fifth year of the nine-year novena leading up to the jubilee marking the 500th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions to St. Juan Diego.
Pope Leo XIV has also appointed Franciscan Father Gerardo Antonio Vargas Cruz as coadjutor bishop of Fajardo-Humacao, Puerto Rico. The bishop-designate will also automatically succeed Bishop Miranda upon his retirement, as required by canon law. Additionally, the Pope sent greetings to Rome’s Jewish community as it prepares to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, addressing the city’s chief rabbi, Riccardo Di Segni.
The first edition of the youth catechism 'YouCat' was published one week after the passing of Pope Francis in May 2025. The new edition, aimed at young people preparing for the vocation of marriage, is scheduled for release in November. Pope Leo XIV reflects on human love in the prologue to the new edition of 'YouCat: Love Forever,' emphasizing that it is not a fleeting feeling but rather 'a decision, a journey, and a lifelong covenant.
The activities for the jubilee year will start on October 12, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. with morning prayer and the celebration of Mass. The cardinal invited the faithful to attend the Mass officially marking the start of this 'time of jubilee grace,' which will take place on October 12 at noon at the Basilica of Guadalupe. He encouraged the faithful to make the most of this jubilee and accompany them on this journey of spiritual renewal and conversion.
