Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León, is an industrial powerhouse in Mexico, supporting a diverse range of industries including ironworks, steelworks, and manufacturing facilities for textiles, processed foods, glass, and plastics, according to NASA Science.
However, urban expansion in Monterrey is constrained by the city's natural geography, which is characterized by steep ridgelines formed over millions of years.
These ridgelines, the result of erosion that left weaker rock layers behind, define the boundaries of Monterrey today.
The Río Santa Catarina cuts through these mountains, eventually flowing onto the semiarid floodplain where the city is situated, further complicating urban development.
