Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted Russian President Vladimir Putin a Russian translation of the Thirukkural during their bilateral talks in New Delhi, as the Russian leader arrived ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13.
The BRICS members, comprising India, Russia, China, Brazil, and South Africa, account for around 49.5 per cent of the global population, 40 per cent of global GDP, and 26 per cent of global trade, according to background information on India’s 2026 Chairship.
During the talks, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh welcomed Putin, and the discussions also covered increasing bilateral trade from the current level of around USD 60 billion to USD 100 billion over the next four years.
In a recent visit, Modi called on Putin to move from 'endless war' to 'end of war,' emphasizing that 'dialogue and diplomacy was the way forward in resolving conflicts' and that 'India stood ready to assist in peace efforts.
