Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has ventured into the entertainment industry by launching a production company called Hope & Hard Work, alongside his longtime chief of staff, Katie Telford. The company is set to make its international sales debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) market.
At the TIFF, Trudeau is expected to present projects including an adaptation of Perry Chafe’s Newfoundland-set coming-of-age novel 'Closer by Sea,' and Uzma Jalaluddin’s cozy mystery 'Detective Aunty.' Trudeau and Telford will serve as executive producers for these projects, following in the footsteps of other high-profile figures who have transitioned into the production world, such as Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Trudeau, who stepped back from politics in January 2025, has been focusing on speaking engagements, including appearances at the World Economic Forum in Davos. His move into the film and TV industry comes at a time when his personal life has also been in the spotlight, with his relationship with pop star Katy Perry keeping him in the orbit of the global entertainment business.
Trudeau and Telford expressed their belief in the power of great storytelling to bring people closer, stating, 'At a time when the world can feel increasingly divided, we believe in the power of great storytelling to bring people closer.' This venture marks a significant career change for Trudeau, who served as prime minister for nearly a decade before resigning in January 2025.
Other notable projects in the pipeline include an adaptation of a script that was described as 'one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read' by Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins. The film is set to go into production in the summer, with Trudeau and Telford attached as executive producers.
