Christchurch, New Zealand, Bishop Michael Gielen has outlined plans for the rebuilding of the city’s earthquake-damaged cathedral, with work set to begin in the coming years.
Gielen, in an interview with Colm Flynn on 'EWTN News Nightly,' stated that the restoration of the cathedral has become a symbol of something larger, emphasizing both physical and spiritual rebuilding.
The new Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, unveiled on July 26, 2026, is a design rendering that reflects the diocese’s vision for a new mother church on the same ground as the original, which was destroyed in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.
Gielen noted that the rebuilding effort has stirred energy across the diocese, with every Catholic family being asked to contribute to the project. A perpetual adoration chapel will be attached to the cathedral, symbolizing the ongoing commitment to faith and community.
The bishop highlighted that the diocese has lost 30 or 35 churches in the last 15 years, emphasizing that the rebuilding is not just about the cathedral but about the entire community’s recovery and spiritual renewal.
